All about Daegu, Daegu Encyclopedia
Daegu is one of 6 metropolitan cities in Korea. Yearly temperature is one of the highest in Korea due to its basin terrain, and especially, Daegu basin is classified as special climate region.
Basin terrain means low lay of ground surrounded by mountains. The temperature of Daegu stays high since hot air is trapped by high mountains. As the temperature rises up to 40ºC, media began to use word ‘Daefrica’ coined by local people.
Even in this high temperature, travelers visiting Daegu is steadily increasing. Kim Gwang Seok Street, Modern Culture Tour and Dongseongro are tourist spots where visitors should never miss.
Kim Gwang Seok Street is formed in the memorial of singer who dominated his era. Original songs to elders and remade songs to the young, his songs are still with many Korean.
Modern Culture Tour is course 2 of the 4 Alley Tour courses. Buildings of modern Korea and experiencing traditional clothing, Hanbok attract travelers. Along the course, Gyesan Catholic Church is one of the photo spots.
Dongseongro is center of the youth. Department stores, cafe and known restaurants presents chance to feel the young culture with shopping. Also, Underground Mall and Clothing Street remind travelers that Dongseongro is the hot spot of shopping in Daegu.
Streets are not all about Daegu. Various festivals every year attract travelers. Among them, Daegu Colorful Festival and Daegu Chimac Festival are the most well known.
Daegu Colorful Festival is being held every May mostly about performances and perades from all around the world.
The word ‘chimac’ in Chimac Festival means coined word of chicken and ‘macju’(Korean word meaning beer). Daegu is the birthplace of famous Korean fried chicken and the festival is being held in every July. Chimac Live Pub, Craft Beer Zone, Foreigner Zone, concerts and EDM party are also held to uplift excitement.
Though Daegu is the birthplace of Korean fried chicken, but that’s not all about cuisine of Daegu. ‘10 tastes of Daegu’ represents the cuisines of Daegu. Napjakmandu, Nonmaegi-meuntang, Nurunguksu, Daegu Makchang, Daegu Yukgaejang, Muchimhoe, Mungtigi, Fugu Bulgogi, Yaki Udon and Dongindong style Braised Ribs are the members.
Napjakmandu is kind of flat dumpling filled with glass noodles. Recently, spicy Tteok-bokki is served together.
Nonmaegi-meuntang is the spicy soup made with catfish. Glass noodles, water celery, enoki mushroom and Chinese pepper blows up fishy smell of freshwater fish.
Nurunguksu is chopped noodles with anchovy soup. The name itself is Daegu dialect meaning Kalguksu(chopped noodles).
Daegu Makchang is grilled beef and pork entrails with pepper paste or salt. Chewy and crispy taste attracts people.
Daegu Yukgaejang is Korean spicy beef soup. Small chunks of well boiled beef add its flavor to soup.
Muchimhoe is seasoned sashimi with boiled conch, squid and see eel adding water celery and radish shreds. Muchimhoe Alley with 40 years of history presents dish with knowhow.
Mungtigi is sliced raw beef topside seasoned with sesame oil and garlic. Only fresh beef can be become Mungtigi.
Fugu Bulgogi presents unique taste for not using meat just as common Bulgogi. Chewy taste of fugu raise appetite.
Yaki Udon of Daegu will show you unique characteristics differs from Japanese Yaki Udon. Barely covered sauce and noodles fried fast on strong fire make its unique taste.
Dongindong style Braised Ribs presents shocking spicy sauce differs from common Braised Ribs with soy sauce. Deep braised beef give tender and juicy taste.
